So my cousin texts in GIFs. Like, mostly GIFs. You ask her how her day was and instead of words you get a raccoon falling into a trash can. First time I saw it I genuinely thought she had some third-party app installed, some secret thing I’d missed. Nope. It’s just… there. On the phone. Always has been. I just never went digging for it.
If that’s you right now — half-curious, half-annoyed that everyone else seems to know something you don’t — this is going to take you about two minutes to sort out.
Real Quick, What’s a GIF
Short looping clip, no sound, a few seconds long, plays on repeat. That’s it. No audio because it doesn’t need any — the movement does the talking. Someone spitting out their coffee, a dog doing a double take, whatever. It says more than “lol” ever could, honestly.
Anyway. Let’s get into it.
On an iPhone
Honestly the annoying part is that it was already on my phone this whole time — I just never went looking .
Go into Messages, open up a chat. Above your keyboard there’s a little row of icons — tap the one that looks like an App Store icon, next to where you type. Somewhere in there is an app called #images. It’s pre-loaded on most iPhones already, so odds are you don’t even need to download anything.
Tap into it, type a word for whatever mood you’re going for — “tired,” “no thanks,” “it’s fine I’m fine” — and it pulls up a grid of GIFs. Pick one, it drops into your message box, you hit send. That’s the whole process.
Don’t see the icon anywhere? Just scroll to the end of that row — there’s a three-dot icon down there — tap it, hit Edit, and turn it on Ten seconds, tops.
Also — and I only found this out by accident — you can copy a GIF link from somewhere like Giphy or off Twitter and just paste it directly into your message field. It’ll usually show up as a little moving preview once it’s sent.
On Android
Android’s messier here because every phone brand does it slightly differently, but the general shape is the same whether you’re on Google Messages, Samsung’s app, or something else.
Open your chat, hit the plus sign or the emoji/sticker icon near the text box — one of those two, depending on your phone. Look for a tab that just says GIF, usually right beside the stickers. Type in a search word, scroll around, tap what you like. Done.
If it’s not showing up at all, a couple things to check: some Samsung phones need the GIF keyboard switched on manually first, buried in the keyboard settings somewhere. And if you’re using Gboard, make sure GIF search is actually turned on in its settings — it’s not always on by default.
Honestly, Check Your Keyboard First
Kind of wish someone had pointed this out to me sooner, honestly . A lot of keyboard apps — Gboard especially — have their own built-in GIF search that has nothing to do with your texting app specifically. There’s usually a small icon right where the emoji button lives.
Why that matters: it works everywhere. Not just Messages. WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, Messenger, wherever you’re typing — same GIF search, same button, no extra steps.
If It’s Not Working
Every so often something goes sideways. Usually it’s one of these:
- Sends as a boring link instead of an actual moving GIF — happens a lot when texting between iPhone and Android, especially on weak signal. Tapping it usually fixes it on the other end.
- No GIF option shows up anywhere — probably just needs an app update.
- It shows up frozen, like a still photo — switch to WiFi and try again. Bad signal tends to flatten GIFs down to one frame.
A Small Warning
GIFs are great right up until someone sends five of them back to back in a group chat and everyone quietly mutes the notifications. One well-placed GIF at the right moment lands way better than a constant stream of them. Save it for something that actually deserves the reaction.
Once you’ve found the button, that’s it — you’re not going back to plain text reactions. Took my cousin about zero seconds to become fluent in this. You’ll probably get there faster.
